Project Management

Peter Kelly heads up GFI, the project management business. GFI provides certainty of project completion within budget and on time and to the desired quality finish. The ‘Photo Gallery’ section provides examples of recent GFI work.

GFI is focused primarily in Indonesia. Successful projects so far include the TAMF, BHP Steel, BHP Billiton and Australian Development Scholarships offices in Jakarta. Current projects include the construction of a Trans National Crime Centre at police head quarters in Jakarta and a villa development in Bali.

Trans National Crime Centre

Trans National Crime Centre, Jakarta, 2004

GFI is currently engaged in the design and construction of the Trans National Crime Centre (TNCC). The TNCC is a facility developed jointly by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Indonesian National Police (POLRI).

A complete upgrade in telephone, computer and video conferencing systems was successfully managed by GFI. The project included raised access floors throughout to accommodate new data, telephone and video conference systems which were part of the process for the implementation of new paperless and facility management systems.

GFI successfully designed and built new offices for the Australian Development Scholarship (ADS) program. ADS administer Australian Government funded scholarships for Indonesians to study in Australia. The program has a turnover of over 20 million dollars per year. The new Jakarta offices were built under budget and the project was completed ahead of schedule.

BHP Billiton, Indonesia, 2002

In 2002, BHP, a global Australian company, merged with Billiton to create BHPB, one of the world’s giant mining companies. New office space and a new image were required for the new BHPB. Peter Kelly managed the development of the new office from design through to completion of construction. BHP Billiton (BHPB) required Peter Kelly to engage and manage the architect and all sub-contractors and all IT, furniture, mechanical and security engineering inputs for a new office and a new image.

After the merger of BHP with Billiton, BHPB senior management required that the new office be the physical roadmap driving the new company’s restructure out of the amalgamation of the two original companies. The new Jakarta office was required to bring together the two entities and their people in an open, transparent working environment. Staff fears and nervousness about future directions had to be managed by the project manager and the change management consultant as the project design was completed and construction proceeded.

The result was an absolutely smooth transition to an office that works and conforms to BHPB’s global charter. Possibly more importantly, it is an office in which BHPB personnel are thrilled to work. BHPB required that their new office be in line with and reflect their global charter. Issues such as environment, materials, occupational health and safety had to conform to international standards.

BHPB also wanted the office to reflect in some way their business in Indonesia. Peter Kelly came up with the idea of a wall of coal, borrowed from Mies van der Rohe’s design of the 1934 German Mining exhibition in Berlin. This is now the focus and talking point of the entire office.

BHP Steel Office, Jakarta

BHP Steel was spun out of the original BHP at the time of the BHP and Billiton merger. It is a smaller company, with smaller needs. It also had to set up quickly in entirely new and separate premises. Time was thus of the essence. Again, Peter Kelly was required to engage and manage the architect and all sub-contractors as well as IT, furniture, mechanical and security engineering inputs. The outcome is a modern, effectively functioning office.

TAMF Office, Jakarta

Clearly not all organisations can – or need – to spend large amounts of time and money. TAMF for example is a tiny aid disbursement office in the depths of Blok M operating on a small budget. Commencement of this project depended on the awarding of a contract from the Australian Government.
