Painting by Australian Geoff Todd illustrating the capture by the Dutch of Prince Diponegoro at Magelang, Central Java, in 1830. Diponegoro, a member of the Yogyakarta Royal Family, led a campaign against the Dutch for five years that went close to bankrupting the colonial administration. Geoff’s Masters Thesis was entitled “The Java War 1825-1830: Some Javanese Aspects”. The thesis analysed Javanese myth-making about the origins of the war, as recorded in a 19th Century Javanese history of the war. The model for the Dutch officer is a former DFAT staff member who now runs the Casa CaSinta gallery in Yogyakarta.
